He went to work on a Monday morning and called my mom when he got to his office. Dad said he did not know how he got there and did not remember driving to work that day. That was his last day to go to work or drive.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p class="p2"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p class="p1"&gt;The cancer was so widespread that any treatment wold be useless, and this was the dark ages of the 1980s. Seriously, the chemo or the radiation killed you before the illness did. We sought a second opinion, which confirmed the diagnosis and prognosis, which was not good.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p class="p2"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p class="p1"&gt;We had Dad at home the whole time, it was a frustrating time, and a fun time as well. It was hard watching him lose his abilities and his mental sharpness. But we got to talk and hang out for a good amount of that period as well. We had started becoming friends before then and this solidified it. Interestingly enough, I have yet to becone friends with my mother. Hmmmm.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p class="p2"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p class="p1"&gt;As the season turned from summer to fall, Dad started to take a turn for the worse. His suffering was minimal, a few narcotics at the end for pain. For that I am thankful, I could not have stood to see him any worse.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p class="p2"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p class="p1"&gt;Thinking about this reminds me of Providence in all aspects of life. Two examples I willmention. One being that when Dad got sick, I quit my work at a gas station to help care for him. A former employer asked me to come work for them at this time. They were a business that specialized in home health equipment. Imagine that. I was able to use all kinds of greatequipment at no cost.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p class="p1"&gt;Second, Dad's very best friend had gone to West Germany for work 2 years previously. Well, in September, Howard had business back here, and they got to spend several days together, talking , praying and being brothers. Interestingly enough, his son and I are still very good friends. Howard died very suddenly 6 years ago this month.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p class="p2"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p class="p1"&gt;During his final days, we had one last conversation. I told him I loved him, he replied that he loved me, too. That was all we needed to say.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p class="p2"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p class="p1"&gt;Dad passed away late on a Monday night. He was with family and friends. It was a warm October day when we buried him, the leaves had just started to turn.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p class="p2"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p class="p1"&gt;After Dad died, my family was never the same. My sisters, all older, were either married or doing their own thing, left me to attend to family matters.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p class="p1"&gt;Oh, and we all adopted. I guess that helps make things more difficult.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p class="p2"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p class="p1"&gt;There is no textbook way that families deal with the loss of a parent. &lt;p&gt;The other day I was ricocheting slowly&lt;br /&gt;off the blue walls of this room,&lt;br /&gt;moving as if underwater from typewriter to piano,&lt;br /&gt;from bookshelf to an envelope lying on the floor,&lt;br /&gt;when I found myself in the L section of the dictionary&lt;br /&gt;where my eyes fell upon the word lanyard.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;No cookie nibbled by a French novelist&lt;br /&gt;could send one into the past more suddenly—&lt;br /&gt;a past where I sat at a workbench at a camp&lt;br /&gt;by a deep Adirondack lake&lt;br /&gt;learning how to braid long thin plastic strips&lt;br /&gt;into a lanyard, a gift for my mother.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I had never seen anyone use a lanyard&lt;br /&gt;or wear one, if that’s what you did with them,&lt;br /&gt;but that did not keep me from crossing&lt;br /&gt;strand over strand again and again&lt;br /&gt;until I had made a boxy&lt;br /&gt;red and white lanyard for my mother.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;She gave me life and milk from her breasts,&lt;br /&gt;and I gave her a lanyard.&lt;br /&gt;She nursed me in many a sick room,&lt;br /&gt;lifted spoons of medicine to my lips,&lt;br /&gt;laid cold face-cloths on my forehead,&lt;br /&gt;and then led me out into the airy light&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;and taught me to walk and swim,&lt;br /&gt;and I, in turn, presented her with a lanyard.&lt;br /&gt;Here are thousands of meals, she said,&lt;br /&gt;and here is clothing and a good education.&lt;br /&gt;And here is your lanyard, I replied,&lt;br /&gt;which I made with a little help from a counselor.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Here is a breathing body and a beating heart,&lt;br /&gt;strong legs, bones and teeth,&lt;br /&gt;and two clear eyes to read the world, she whispered,&lt;br /&gt;and here, I said, is the lanyard I made at camp.&lt;br /&gt;And here, I wish to say to her now,&lt;br /&gt;is a smaller gift—not the worn truth&lt;/p&gt; Not to give anything away, but Jack and Daniel are trying to undo the demise of Flight 815. The supposed worst thing that has happened to the victims of that plane crash.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br style="font-family: Georgia;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br style="font-family: Georgia;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Georgia;"&gt;I have had a LOT of free time on my hands recently. I lost my job three months ago and have not successfully gained other employment yet. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br style="font-family: Georgia;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Georgia;"&gt;Some days I think: I wish I could undo... you fill in the blank. I look back at all the turns and paths my life have taken, and on the &lt;/span&gt;&lt;i style="font-family: Georgia;"&gt;surface&lt;/i&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Georgia;"&gt;, I hate the results. Deep down though, I know that God is sovereign and is working my life to produce something that will honor Him.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;I need to keep moving, putting one foot down while picking up the other. /&gt;&lt;span class="fullpost"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;Christmas&lt;/span&gt;...left Tupelo Christmas Eve afternoon, got to my mom's in Huntsville @ 5:20 p.m.. Thought about going to service @ SPC, but decided to stay @ home the whole time I was there. Did laundry, enjoyed time with Mom, had a few good meals, and a few visits from friends. Twenty minutes shy of 24 hours at home, I left again.&lt;br /&gt;Mom is starting to feel and look her 82 years, I hope to get her over here in the next year. It will be good for all of us.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;New Year's Eve&lt;/span&gt; in of all places Florence, Alabama! Billy and Katie came in from Huntsville and we chilled @ Margaret's parent's place. I'll believe it when I see it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="fullpost"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Got to the gym a couple of times...got to pick up the pace on that.&lt;br /&gt;On Tuesday, went to Florence to have dinner with one of "the good ones" at Dale's Steakhouse. Wednesday, went to the Reformation Party @ LPC. Made me glad that event only comes around once a year.&lt;br /&gt;Thursday, Had dinner with one of the guys from Columbus, Ga&lt;br /&gt;Friday, a old friend from Dallas (now Jackson, MS) came up for a visit. &lt;a href="http://danmichaelcolbert.com/bigbandbio.html"&gt;Dan&lt;/a&gt; plays and sings a Swing/Big Band that was playing up here for a  charity event. It was good to see him sing and play as well as visit with him on Friday and Saturday.&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;(LOST MY BLACKBERRY, GRRR!! new one will be here on Wednesday)&lt;/span&gt; He headed home around noon.&lt;br /&gt;Watched LSU  vs. UAT. AU won nicely! Complex parallel stories, well told.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Zodiac&lt;/span&gt;--Based on the actual files of the Zodiac Killer of the 1970s, very interesting movie. If you watch, please note the subtle ways the director shows the passage of time. Worth your time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Flags of Our Fathers&lt;/span&gt;--Shows how the true story can get lost in the enthusiasms of the moment. I am looking forward to that.&lt;br /&gt;      Life is good here in Tupelo, I have found a church to call home, and             a great gym.&lt;br /&gt;      It seems to me, that I lead a life of solitude, and about 98% of the             time I am good with that. We had some fun in spite of the heat and humidity.  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Left Huntsville @ 6:25 this morning, and picked up my help from the Salvation Army @ 9:30. Mickey Plott and Derek Simpson had followed me to Tupelo. It is good to put in a hard day's work. Folks have been showing me the ropes and giving me pointers and advice on dealing with customers, what model cars need special attention, etc. The GM's reporting process is straight forward and I anticipate no problems with that. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I am so glad to be moving forward, life(work wise) has seemed stagnate, but that is no longer the case.&lt;br /&gt;In other news, Katie-Belle came to town June 25th, and it was a pleasure to see her and let her see Perpetual Groove for the first time! &lt;br /&gt;My buddy Hal was in town for Pgroove, we got to hang out a good bit, including a dinner @ Big Ed's Pizza. I am glad that joint is back, even though I am leaving town soon.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I went to Atlanta on 6/30 to see Disco Biscuits, Umphree's McGee, and Perpetual Groove. It was a full and complete day of fun and great music, especially Pgroove. Got to meet some fun people from Richmond, Amy and Chris.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Billy finally showed up around the 5th and it was good to see him as well.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q214/gregray/Summer%202007/IMG_4381.jpg" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;img src="http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q214/gregray/Summer%202007/th_IMG_4381.jpg"&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Katie and her dad went Hang-gliding recently, I got to tag along and shoot pictures. It was a treat to be there(all day) with the Ibsen/Park clan.  We had laughs, shared meals and played games.&lt;br /&gt;Billy and Katie left on the 10th...I sure miss them, even though we have some sort of contact every day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;LHP has bought a delightful bungalow in the Mayfair Park area, I am thrilled for her. I stayed with him and his most lovely bride Katie (Belle) at their home in Gold Canyon.  5 days in the desert, 5 star filled nights as well. I really love that town. Tuesday, we took the PATH Train from NJ to WTC.Very sobering. &lt;span class="fullpost"&gt;Got to hike the Brooklyn Bridge, a dream come true! Had 2 dogs from Gray's Papaya--mmm hot dogs! Played around Times Square a good bit. Saw Spiderman 3 in a great theater near Lincoln Center, missed the stadium seating! Flaked out on going to Yankee game.  Enjoyed movie more, I think. Had Matzah Ball soup Wednesday at Carnegie Deli. Sweet wedding at Burritt Museum atop Monte Sano, the bride was lovely and the groom cleaned up nice! Wonderful reception with plenty of food and drink to go around. A followup party was held back at the hotel. Needless to say, a good time was had by all, some more than others! I called it an early evening and got to church Sunday morning. And before you know it,  33 lives gone, enormous numbers of peoples lives changed forever. You never know when your next breath is your last. Take care of the ones you love, reach out to the ones that are hurting, love the unlovable.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Now that moving (Tupelo, MS, to be closer to my friends out West!) is becoming a reality, it gets a bit scary. I was in Tupelo yesterday, and there is a ton stuff to consider. Where to live? Apartment? House? Thank the Lord I don’t have to consider kids/schools. Oh, and have I done the right thing?&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;I got to get my butt in gear and get my heart pumping. I have been so down since January, not an excuse, not a reason, just a fact. Though the death loved one is always sad, I just had to share some humor (in my own Greg way) that I discovered during the time I spent in Clanton, Al for her funeral.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span class="fullpost"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);font-family:arial;" &gt;&lt;br /&gt;Legally, my grandmother's name was Leta Mae Lowery Gore Cleckler Northcutt.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);font-family:arial;" &gt; She was born Lowery and outlived three husbands. I was reviewing the "In Memory" card the day prior to the funeral, She was listed as Leta Mae Gore Northcutt. I commented on this error, not listing her "Cleckler" name quietly to my mom. No response. I let the matter drop.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);font-family:arial;" &gt;The next day I asked openly to all family present about the "name change" and I was told that she had forgotten her most recent husbands, thus the omission of Cleckler. My cousin and I thought this was very funny, because she also had forgotten the man that gave her the name Northcutt. My best guess is there is some sore feelings regarding Mr. Cleckler and his courtship of my grandmother. I barely remember him. Apparently, this is a subject that is not to be spoken of, so I plan on asking about it at every family gathering until I get an answer. I can't wait till Thanksgiving!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);font-family:arial;" &gt;I found great joy in the pre-recorded music selections for the service. The day prior to the funeral, the family gathered at the funeral home to make those selections. We were given a binder full of selections to choose from. We could also provide our own as well. My cousin had  chosen "Amazing Grace" by Aaron Neville...WOW! In all seriousness, it was awesome. But the other piece of recorded music, not so much. In that binder I mentioned, all kinds of music, Hymns, Standards, Elvis, Sinatra, a wide selection to choose from. Mind you, these are not original recordings, but "covered" by a male or female studio singer.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);font-family:arial;" &gt;Well, I'll never name names, but one person noticed that "Memory" from the Broadway musical Cats!!! Suffice to say, I could barely contain myself when the service opened with that song!!. I shall never forget maintaining my composure  and shedding a tear from laughter at that most solemn of occasions.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);font-family:arial;" &gt;Kinda long and wordy, I know.
